The family immigration journey

The forms you'll meet, step by step.

Every family's path is different, but many follow some version of these steps. FormVeritas checks the forms at each one.

  1. 1

    Petition

A U.S. citizen or permanent resident files a petition for a fiancé(e), spouse or relative. USCIS decides whether the relationship qualifies.

  2. 2

    Financial support

The sponsor shows they can support the person immigrating, using the affidavit that applies to the visa or green card.

  3. 3

    Green card

If the relative is in the U.S. and eligible, they apply to adjust status, often with a work permit and travel document request.

  4. 4

    Remove conditions

Spouses who receive a 2-year conditional green card generally apply to remove the conditions before it expires.

  5. 5

    Citizenship

After meeting the residence requirements, a permanent resident can apply to naturalize.

A general overview, not legal advice. Your steps depend on your situation; check the USCIS instructions or ask an attorney.

Common family-petition mistakes

The details that trip up family filings.

Family petitions repeat the same people, dates and addresses across several forms. That's where small inconsistencies slip in.

Marriage and address dates

Dates of marriage, prior marriages and address history that don't fit together within a form.

Names and family details

Partly filled entries for a person, such as a given name with no family name or a missing date of birth.

Yes/No answers and explanations

Questions left unanswered, or a "Yes" with no explanation where the form asks for one.

A-Numbers and account numbers

A-Numbers, USCIS online account numbers and Social Security numbers written in the wrong format.

Signatures

Petitioner, beneficiary, interpreter and preparer signature and date lines left blank.

Outdated editions

The Workspace fills the edition USCIS accepts, and warns you when that edition changes.

Know when to get help

Some situations need an attorney.

FormVeritas checks forms; it can't weigh legal risk. Consider talking to a licensed immigration attorney or DOJ-accredited representative if any of these apply:

  • Any arrest, charge or conviction, anywhere in the world
  • A past immigration violation, overstay, removal or deportation
  • A prior visa or green card denial
  • Previous marriages that haven't been legally ended
  • Questions about whether you're eligible at all

Family filing questions

Which forms do I need to sponsor my spouse?

A U.S. citizen or permanent resident usually files Form I-130 with Form I-130A for a spouse. If your spouse is in the U.S. and eligible to adjust status, Form I-485 is often filed with Form I-864, and Forms I-765 and I-131 if they want a work permit and travel document. Check the USCIS instructions or ask an attorney which apply to you.

How many audits does a spouse green card packet use?

A typical packet is 6 forms. Checking each once, then re-checking after you fix what's flagged, is about 12 audits, which the Full Application plan ($79, 20 audits) covers with room to spare.

Can FormVeritas tell me if I qualify?

No. FormVeritas checks the forms you fill for blank answers, entry formats, conflicting dates and missing signatures. It does not decide eligibility or give legal advice.

Do you keep copies of my family’s information?

The Form Workspace does not save drafts to your account; you download your draft to your own device. Audit servers hold form data in memory only while they build your report.

Can I track our case after we file?

Yes. Add your receipt numbers to the FormVeritas Case Tracker to see status updates from USCIS in one place.

Is this cheaper than hiring someone to prepare our forms?

Yes, but it does something different. FormVeritas helps you check forms you fill yourself. Online preparation services and attorneys prepare the forms for you, and attorneys can also advise on your case.

Your family's case deserves a careful second look.

One skipped answer. One mismatched date. One missing signature. That is all it can take to slow down an immigration case. Your first audit is free.

Not legal advice. No approval guarantee. A smarter way to catch form mistakes before you file.
